It's time. The aspen groves on the Sierra slopes rising to the west of Reno are revealing themselves as streaks of gold. Trees around town are starting to show tinges of yellow and orange and red. Autumn is really arriving and it's time to plan on getting out and enjoying the fall color show across the Truckee Meadows and up in the Sierra Nevada around Lake Tahoe. Some of the most stunning displays I've ever seen will be taking place right in our neighborhood.

You don't have to go anywhere to experience the spectacle of the changing season. People have planted a rainbow variety of deciduous trees and shrubs throughout the Truckee Meadows. To see color from around the world, visit the Wilbur D. May Arboretum and Botanical Garden in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park. The May Arboretum is offering free fall foliage guided walks on September 27, October 3, and October 11, all at 9 a.m. Meet at the May Arboretum Office in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, 1595 N. Sierra St., Reno. Call (775) 785-4153 for more information.

Fall around Lake Tahoe is unsurpassed. The combination of golden aspens and Lake Tahoe Basin scenery just can't be beat. A short drive to the south of the lake is Hope Valley, a world famous spot for capturing photos of the autumn show. Learn more about these places and more by reading Fall Color in the Reno / Lake Tahoe Region.
