On September 30, Reno City Council members Sharon Zadra, Pierre Hascheff, and Dave Aiazzi, together with involved community organizations, announced the start of Reno's Fall Clean & Green. Each Saturday during October (4, 11, 18, and 25), Reno residents will be able to get rid of one 8-foot truck bed of household trash and/or yard waste at no charge. Collection activities will be at various locations around the city, moving each weekend so everyone gets a shot at a nearby dump site. Bicycles and computers will be collected for refurbishing, and metal will be separated out for recycling. You can't just toss in anything, so be sure to ask volunteers at the sites about restricted items, such as pesticides and other hazardous waste. Reno residents will receive a voucher with their trash bill, giving them a free trip to the Lockwood Landfill from October 1 through 31.

Find the date and location near you at the Reno Clean & Green website. You can also volunteer to help at a collection site by using the online volunteer form. Read my article to learn more about Going Green in Reno.

These are such great events. Even in my tiny rural town, we’re having a Great Cotter Cleanup on October 16 as part of the Keep Arkansas Beautiful program. We get about 20 people to show up, which is really good for a small town. They clean about 8 miles of highway through our sleepy White River town. Cotter is a fly-fishing destination, home of the historic Rainbow Arch Bridge, and I like it when we keep it clean. Good luck with your event!
