After months of anticipation, the wait is over. At an unveiling this afternoon at the Siena Hotel Casino, managing partner Stuart Katzoff of Reno's new Triple-A baseball team announced the name - Reno Aces - and revealed the team's logo. Reno Aces is the winner from over 3,500 entries submitted during the Name the Team Contest. Names were judged on regional relevance, family-friendliness, and the ability to create a logo, mascot, and chant.

The stadium is a project of SK Baseball. The baseball team is moving to Reno from Tucson, AZ, and remains affiliated with the major league Arizona Diamondbacks. In conjunction with the stadium, an entertainment and shopping zone is planned for the area around the ball park. Fans wanting to follow stadium progress, or who are interested in learning about season tickets, can visit the Reno Baseball website. If you want to get a real-time look at the construction, visit my Reno Webcams page and click on the Triple-A Baseball Stadium Webcam link.

The opening game is scheduled for April, 2009. Play ball!

Besides model trains, baseball is one of my passions. I read in a New York Times online article that the stadium is being built in what was a rail yard.

Yes, it was a rail yard many moons ago. Until stadium construction began, the area housed a fire station, seedy old motels, and weedy empty lots. Whether you are a baseball fan or not, the stadium project is reclaiming a blighted area of the city (well, the fire station was okay).
