Reno's downtown post office, an art deco style building erected in the 1930s, will soon become another property of the Reno Redevelopment Agency. The $5.1 million dollar purchase and impending transfer of ownership was announced in a recent City of Reno press release. A significant aspect of this acquisition is that the building, among many in Reno, was designed by our own architect Frederick DeLongchamps.

Plans call for renovating the building and restoring the open atrium said to be part of the original design. Various shops will occupy the building while the north side parking lot will become a public plaza and another place for people to access the Truckee River in downtown Reno. I've never seen parts of the structure not accessible to the public, but have heard it was quite impressive when first opened. Meanwhile, the post office has a distribution facility working at the east end and public service windows at the west end.

The city plans a ceremony to mark the purchase and celebrate the addition of another piece to the downtown redevelopment puzzle. Stay tuned for the date and time.
