If you've been feeling the heat lately, it's not your imagination. At this writing, Reno has had 33 days in a row of over 90 degree weather. The record is 35 straight days, set in 2005. The National Weather Service Forecast Office in Reno is calling for 91 on Friday and 88 on Saturday. If that forecast holds up, we will match the record. After Saturday, it's back into the 90s with clear skies and high desert sunshine.

This heat wave is not a fluke. According to an article in the Reno Gazette-Journal, Reno summers are getting hotter. Since records have been kept, eight of Reno's warmest summers have occured since 2000. The average number of days above 90 is also on the rise. Fallon, 60 miles east of Reno, is experiencing the same phenomenon. According to Dr. Kelly Redmond of the Western Regional Climate Center at the Desert Research Institute, this is a regional climate shift and not just a blip centered around Reno.

We don't have to stoically swelter in silence. Options for cooling off include Wingfield Park in downtown Reno, Sparks Marina Park, Kings Beach up at Lake Tahoe, and numerous public pools around Reno and Sparks.

Lake of the Sky Music, Arts, and Eco Festival is August 9th at Tahoe Vista, on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. For info, event schedule, tickets, and more, go to the Lake of the Sky website or call Nick Catanella (Festival Commander) at (707) 542-6755.
