Mermaids in the Truckee River...
Wingfield Park and the Truckee River, downtown Reno

When it's hot (like now), Wingfield Park in downtown Reno is packed. Folks of every description flock to the Truckee River to take the cool water cure and just relax beside the flowing stream. Together with the Truckee River Whitewater Park, it's like a free water park right in the middle of the city. You can get a glimpse of just how crowded it is from the Whitewater Park Webcam that's pointed at the river from the Wingfield Park Amphitheater.

When Wingfield Park is busy, nearby parking becomes scarce. There are a few free spaces (2 hour limit) on the south side of the river at Barbara Bennett Park, but don't count on getting one of these unless you're real lucky. Street parking in the immediate vicinity is metered. Don't try to sneak by without paying or you will get a ticket. From personal experience I know it will set you back $10. The Parking Gallery on the corner of 1st Street and Sierra Street isn't free, but it's less than $10 for a few hours. The Cal-Neva parking structure is free, but it's a couple of blocks further to walk. You'll find it at the corner of 1st Street and Center Street. The entrance is off Center Street.
