The Washoe County District Health Department recently began efforts to control the mosquito population, and thus the spread of the viral infection known as West Nile fever. The primary control method being used is aerial spraying of various wetlands around the Reno and Sparks urban area and in Washoe Valley to the south. The department will also be checking for abandoned swimming pools and looking at storm drain catchment basins. According to department spokeswoman Tracie Douglas, the chemical used prevents mosquito larvae from becoming biting adults and does not affect humans, fish, or other animals. Residential areas will not be sprayed.

The West Nile Virus Fact Sheet has lots of information about dealing with this serious disease, which is a threat to livestock as well. No vaccine exists for humans and pets like cats and dogs, but there is one for horses. The department's website also provides a West Nile Virus Brochure in .pdf format that you can print and keep for reference.
