Washoe County budget shortfalls are reaching the library system. First victim is the Mendive Community Library in Sparks, which was closed on May 16. The other branches are to operate on reduced hours. According to the Washoe County Library website, there will be 39.5 fewer hours open to the public starting July 1. There are also several vacant positions that will not be filled.
The library announcement has more information, including a list of library branches and hours to take effect July 1.
Personally, I find this distressing. Libraries and access to information are fundamental to a democratic society. Needed budget cuts should be made elsewhere. What do you think?
