Caucus Controversy

By , About.com GuideFebruary 11, 2008

Follow me on:

The Nevada Presidential Caucuses held in January continue to generate commentary, and controversy. Reno / Tahoe citizens who participated are all over the map about the experience and not shy about publicly sharing their opinions. The Reno Gazette-Journal has printed numerous letters from caucus participants, both pro and con, and has itself weighed in on the editorial page.

Caucusing worked for me, but I've got a few things to say about it. Should we try to fix the caucus system? Have primary elections instead? It's up to us, the citizens and voters, to decide.

Barrack Obama’s 11 largest voting percentage were all caucus states. This bears repeating, out of all the states that have cast votes, the top 11 that voted for Barrack Obama were all caucus states in which 88% less voters determine the selection of each delegate.

Further proof that caucuses overwhelmingly misrepresent Barrack Obama can be found in Washington State. Washington State held both a caucus and then 10 days later a non binding primary. Barrack Obama won the caucus 68-31%, then barely eeked out a win 50% to 49.6%.in the primary race. Barrack Obama netted 53 delegates, HIllary Clinton only 25, this in a state that had a non-binding primary that ended up in a virtual dead heat.

Barrack Obama then used his caucus lead to demand that first the delegates, then the superdelegates, tow the line. And to top it off, it’s Hillary that is being portrayed as the villian in all of this. I don’t think so.

You all owe Bill Clinton an apology for not being able to comprehend his very salient and intellectually superior position.
